In life - as it must be lived today - bad things happen. People make poor choices...and suffer the consequences. "Justice" is delivered...and sometimes it is not so just. The "normal" stresses and strains of living in this fallen, broken world drain our energy and can take away our hope.
Sometimes, we are called to do something about it. But sometimes the best we can do, the only thing we can do, is show some kindness.
Maybe its just because I am a little tired and sad myself today, but when I read the second half of John 19, which describes Jesus' death and burial, I get a sense of quiet and sadness but also kindness: a sponge of wine for a thirsty, dying man; spices to be wrapped up with the body; Nicodemus' support for Jesus, but only in secret.
Yes, some days we can act to change the world. But on some days it may be enough just to help each other get through it.
