Why I Need Patience Right Away
Apr 16, 2014
In our house, there are many things that demand patience and steady effort: cleaning up, getting in shape, losing or gaining weight (yes, gaining weight takes patience), writing, playing video games, keeping the yard looking alright.
Each of these things can be done quickly, but they don't work out well if you do it that way. Cleaning the house fast is good, for example, when mom is visiting, but to keep a house comfortable at all times takes steady effort. You won’t go far in Candy Crush without patience.
There are at least 2 reasons why patience is hard: the waiting and being consistent. Just letting time pass is a hard skill. Showing back up again and again, over a long period of time, will eventually force questions (“Why am I doing this?”) and will take sacrifice.
In real life, developing in these areas is not easy. I have been encouraged lately by the Psalms, Psalm 25 in particular:
To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
O my God, in you I trust;
let me not be put to shame;
let not my enemies exult over me.
I don’t have the patience for patience. I need God’s help if I am ever going grow.
